Karbala has a distinguished and religious association due to being the home of the holy shrines of Imam Al-Hussein and Imam Al-Abbas (PBUT). For this reason, this city has become a main tourist attraction especially for religious tourism. Karbala enjoys a landscape that combines desert with lush green areas, which helps create the idea of a village that addresses the tourist’s need of a nature-inspired location away from the city’s noise and pollution. The village also enjoys a desert climate adapted to modern needs.
The city of Najaf is the location of Imam Ali Bin Abi Talib’s (PBUH) Shrine since the year 133 of the Islamic calendar. For this reason, this city has become the main destination of many Muslims and in particular Shiah Muslims. The idea for this project came about from the need to tackle the accumulated neglect over the years of this historic city (in comparison to other locations of a similar nature) as well as its lack of the most basic facilities for residents as well as tourists.
The significance of this idea is that it is based on an important leap of imagination in construction terms as it is located at the main entrance of the city. It will also provide for the occupational need of such a utilization of structure in a modern manner unprecedented in Iraq. The project has a positive impact in terms of providing an alternative location for the current worn-out commercial quarters that are bound to disappear due to re-planning and the passage of time.
This proposed private study was conducted for an area taken out of Wadi Al-Salam’s graveyard in Najaf which extends from Al-Tousi Street to Karbala’s highway. The purpose of the project was to reduce the city’s congestion and transform the current deteriorating state of markets, offices, clinic etc to create modern, state of the art spaces as well as creating an atmosphere suitable for multiple commercial uses such as car showrooms and specialized commercial agencies.
